(It’s Always Okay to Begin Again)

I am grateful always for the chance to begin again.

To course correct as I learn from my mistakes.

Getting the wrong dog helped me further refine what type of dog would be the best fit for my life.

And what’s clear is that dog must nap a lot. Or have an easy off switch. I lean toward getting a senior dog. May 8 years old or older. But still playful and a little kooky.

Now I know the No. 1 trait I seek in a dog is mellowness at home.

He must let me do my work in peace.

I should not have to worry that he’ll chew something inappropriate and need an X-ray and/or exploratory surgery to find a lost squeaker.

Nor should I have to worry that she will chew through rug loops. Or bite chunks out of the yoga mat like Hopper, a Bassett Hound I fostered.

Being able to course correct gives me great relief.

No one is forcing me to stick with a dog who isn’t the best fit.

And I’m grateful for the chance to define my own needs and draw some protective borders around them.

Creating the calm space I enjoy helps me serve my clients better. I focus better. More of my attention can be on the work at hand. Not on preventing mini disasters.

The last few weeks living with a dog with no “off” switch highlighted the importance of intentionally creating a home that’s a sanctuary. A refuge where creativity blooms.

It’s all about creating not only the workspace but also the mindspace where anything is possible.

Reader, I ended up returning a hyper dog I’d adopted to a Lab Rescue group. I think he was maybe 2, not a calmer 5.

And so I began again.

A few months later, I did adopt the mostly mellow Lab mix I’d dreamed of. He sleeps a lot. And he keeps himself entertained in the dog yard.

Have you ever realized that some aspect of your life was not serving you?

Maybe you’ve been planning to write a book but not been able to get started. Or maybe writer’s block hit. Something’s in the way. Perhaps a block that you’re not fully aware of. Maybe it’s a doubt or limiting belief that you created or accept as true—even if it isn’t.

If you need help overcoming an obstacle to writing your book, find support. You don’t have to go it alone.

Writer & Coach

I’m Sandra Yin.

And I love to uncover hidden voices. Growing up, I rarely saw anyone on TV or in the news who resembled me. Nor was my experience reflected in the books I read. Like many other people, especially women and immigrants, I was used to feeling invisible. As I’ve honed my craft over the past 20+ years, I’ve made it my mission to bring more stories to life on the page, so that everyone can feel seen.
